Description
The desktop globe features Mercator’s Sixteenth Century World map. The globe spins on its axis and sits on a dark wood base with brass detailing. Perfectly sized for the desk or a shelf. Mercator was a Flemish cartographer who produced his map of the world in 1569.
The linear scale of the Mercator map increases with latitude and distorts the size of geographical objects far from the equator. For this reason the map conveys a distorted perception of the overall geometry of the planet making the polar regions look larger than would be seen on a modern day map.
