Marco Campos arrived in the 1994 European Formula Opel Championship with a string of South American karting titles to his name. He enhanced his already strong reputation by winning the title in his first season with Draco Racing.
He was spoilt for choice for 1995. Offered a German Formula 3 ride as Ralf Schumacher’s team-mate in Willi Weber’s WTS team, Campos remained with Draco and graduated straight to Formula 3000. He qualified fifth for his debut at Silverstone and finished fourth at Enna-Pergusa but it had been an otherwise difficult learning year. And then on the last lap of the final round at Magny-Cours, he crashed into Thomas Biagi while approaching the Adelaide hairpin.
His car was launched and the Brazilian’s helmet hit the barrier. He suffered skull fractures from which he died in a Paris hospital during the early hours of Tuesday morning. Campos was the only driver to be killed in an FIA F3000 race and was an unfulfilled talent.
