The German Touring Car Championship (DTM) has raced on temporary street circuits in Shanghai on two occasions. In 2004, a loose manhole cover caused Bernd Maylander to crash during the first heat and race two only went ahead after a five-hour delay. Six years later and 2.5 miles southeast, the Pudong district was chosen as venue for the final round of the 2010 championship. There were no problems with the manhole covers but the circuit lack grip and there were issues with the citing of walls and tyre barriers. Title contender Bruno Spengler crashed at the fast 180-degree final corner during qualifying but suggestions that a chicane should be introduced for the race were rebuffed as the circuit would lose its FIA licence. All-but-one practice session had been red-flagged, so the drivers were told not to take unnecessary risks during the race which was completed without undue incident. Paul di Resta finished in a conservative second place to clinch the title from race winner Gary Paffett. The 2011 race was cancelled due to a clashing World Touring Car Championship event at Tianma, just 20 miles outside the city.
