The Targa Florio was run on the Madonie circuits before it was organised on an unsuitable 3.554-mile circuit in Palmero's Parco della Favorita from 1938-40. Overtaking was banned on much of the circuit because it was too narrow. Giovanni Rocco's works Maserati 6CM won in 1938 after the leaders collided. Luigi Villoresi won the next two editions of the race before Italy joined World War II.
