Leyburn was a World War II US Army Air Force bomber base set in Queensland’s remote Darling Downs farming region. This previously unraced dusty and flat venue was chosen as late replacement for the 1949 Australian Grand Prix when plans to use Lowood fell through. Agreement was reached with the three farmers who owned the land with the three corners named after their families. 1949 was run as a scratch rather than previous handicap basis. Lesser races continued to be held for another six years before Leyburn closed to racing.
