The popularity of Champ Car racing in Mexico was vividly illustrated in 2001 by the enthusiasm for a new race in Monterrey’s Fundidora Park. The Jerry Forsythe and Pat Patrick-inspired circuit was laid out in the shadow of a dilapidated 100-year-old steel works and provided a difficult mixture of turns. Flat and wide, the track offered good views for spectators and plenty of passing opportunities for drivers. The circuit was the first phase of a new sports complex that now includes a baseball stadium and entertainment complex in the park. Fundidora Park was also host to Mexico’s A1GP race in 2006 but that was the last year racing was held here.
