Temporary circuits abounded in Argentina in the immediate post-war years, with the wooded Parque Palermo chosen for the 1948-50 Buenos Aires races. Luigi Villoresi defeated Achille Varzi after a close contest in 1948, but Pablo Luis Pesatti died during a national event later that year. Further tragedy overshadowed the 1949 international races, for the great Jean-Pierre Wimille was killed while practising a works Gordini T15 on 28 January. Alberto Ascari’s Ferrari 166 won that year’s Buenos Aires GP in December. The races moved to the nearby Costanera circuit in 1951, a year before the permanent Autodrómo 17 de Octubre opened.
