Built in 1960 just outside Georgia’s state capital, Atlanta Motor Speedway is a high-banked (24 degrees) superspeedway with the best viewing on the current NASCAR calendar. The early season visit of NASCAR’s Sprint Cup is the highlight of Atlanta’s year and Richard Petty made his final such appearance here at the end of the 1992 season. Owner Bruton Smith rebuilt the facility in 1997, adding a dogleg at the startline to match his other speedways at Charlotte and Texas. The USAC National Championship visited Atlanta in the 1960s and late-1970s and it held a round of the Indy Racing League during the early years of that reinvented championship.
