It will be the second time a Penske trio has locked out the front row at Indianapolis, with Rick Mears, Danny Sullivan and Al Unser accomplishing the same feat in 1988.
Further back NASCAR star Kyle Larson qualified for the pole shootout on his first attempt and starts fifth in his bid to win ‘The Double’ by standing on the top steps at the Indy 500, followed by NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. Alexander Rossi was the only non-Penske to record a 234mph lap, and starts fourth for Arrows McLaren.
At the other end of the field, 2022 Indy 500 winner Marcus Ericsson, scraped onto the grid who after crashing during practice on Thursday. He failed to make the initial top 30, and had to run in the Last Chance shootout, doing just enough to avoid being bumped: averaging 230.027mph over four laps, with only Graham Rahal (who averaged 229.974mph) and Nolan Siegel (who did not qualify) behind him.
With the full 33 car grid now set, here’s what the order will look like as the cars roll to the start, alongside details of which drivers will be competing in the 108th edition of the Indy 500.
