Ferrari's 296 GT3 will compete in races from 2023; the V6-turbocharged sports car replaces the 488 GT3

Ferrari has revealed its new 296 GT3 car, which will make its debut at next January’s Daytona 24 Hours.

Based on the 296 GTB road car, the V6-turbocharged GT3 version promises 20% more downforce than the 488 GT3 that it replaces, along with a lighter six-speed gearbox and a quick-release system for the front and rear sections for rapid repairs in races.

The 592bhp car is likely to compete at Le Mans, and in the World Endurance Championship from 2024 when a new GT3-based category is introduced.

Ferrari’s Attivita Sportive GT department developed the car in around 18 months, while simultaneously working on the Le Mans Hypercar that will also make its race debut next year.

Antonello Coletta, head of Ferrari Attivita Sportive GT, said that the team was pressured by the short timescale, as well as the expectations of the new car.

“We have won a lot in GT3 and we need to repeat our results of the past: [with] the 488, 458 and 430,” he said. “We have a long tradition of victory in the GT3 category.”

More steering wheel controls and easier adjustment in cockpit

The 296 GTB road car’s aluminium chassis — developed in conjunction with Ferrari’s racing engineers — has had its wheelbase stretched by the permitted 60mm to improve stability, and the engine has been dropped to lower the centre of gravity. The hybrid element is not used by the GT3.

Given the range of series that it is expected to compete in, Ferrari said that it has been engineered for performance and driveability, to suit professionals and gentlemen drivers in both sprint and endurance races.

A cockpit redesign promises quick adjustments to driving positions when changing drivers, and more controls on the steering wheel, which is claimed to be inspired by its Formula 1 cars.

Components are said to be more accessible for faster adjustement.

Although there is no formal link between Attivita Sportive GT and the Formula 1 team, Coletto said that knowledge was shared between departments during the car’s development.
