The Australian Grand Prix once again sits at the very top of the Formula 1 schedule in 2025, as the Albert Park circuit returns as the opening round in the calendar for the first time in six years.

Lewis Hamilton will be hoping that it’s an omen for his debut as a Ferrari driver: every one of his championship-winning seasons has begun with a flight to Melbourne for the initial race of the season (even if the race was called off at the last minute in 2020).

His run of six titles in seven seasons came to an end in 2021, along with Melbourne’s opening slot on the calendar, which it had held for 22 of the previous 24 years and ceded to Bahrain.

But the start of next season coincides with Ramadan, so the F1 paddock will fly to Australia after the pre-season test in Bahrain, then wind its way up to China and then Japan, which forms the first round of a triple-header completed by a return trip to the Middle East for races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

That will conclude a hectic first part of the season, featuring five races in just over a month, in which the prospects look good for an almighty championship battle between Ferrari, McLaren, Red Bull and Mercedes, given that their 2025 cars will be evolved from 2024’s close-matched machines.

Two weeks later comes the Miami Grand Prix — a race that often sees teams bring the first of the year’s major upgrades. McLaren did so in 2024, and instantly had the fastest car on the grid, so watch out for the potential of a revised competitive order.

Imola is next on May 16, marking the start of the European season with another triple-header. The following week will bring the final Monaco Grand Prix to be held in May for some time. Its clash with the Indy 500 (on May 25) will be avoided from 2026, when the blue riband event is shifted to a June date.

Spain wraps up the three races in a row before a trip to Canada, and then the remainder of the European rounds, including the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on July 6. In 2025, the summer break will take place between the Hungarian Grand Prix on August 3 and the Dutch Grand Prix on August 31.

The final run-in mirrors the 2024 season, with races in Baku and Singapore before an extended run in the Americas: Austin, Mexico, Brazil and Las Vegas precede the final two rounds in Qatar and Abu Dhabi — another triple header to bring the year to a close on December 7.

The Melbourne race weekend will start on Friday March 14, with two free practice sessions. Another free practice session and qualifying will take place on Saturday March 15 and will be followed by the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday March 16.
