Silverstone announces full crowds for 2021 British Grand Prix

The 2021 British Grand Prix will be one of the first Formula 1 races with a capacity crowd in attendance since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic last year.

Silverstone has confirmed that a full crowd is welcome to attend this year’s race as part of the UK Government’s Event Research Programme, with 140,000 fans able to attend the race should they meet specific rules to ensure the race goes ahead safely.

Ticket holders for the race will need to provide proof of a negative lateral flow test taken within 48 hours of arrival or proof of full vaccination in order to attend the race.

“This is something we have all been working towards for months and I cannot wait to welcome a full capacity crowd back to Silverstone this July,” Silverstone managing director Stuart Pringle said of the announcement.

“Many of our fans rolled their tickets over from 2020 but they are now well placed to enjoy what is sure to be one of the highlights of the summer.”

The British Grand Prix will also be the first race to host a sprint qualifying race, a concept newly introduced for three races during the 2021 season.

Qualifying will take place on Friday of the race weekend after FP1. The results of that will set the order of the qualifying sprint on Saturday with the 17-lap mini-race setting the grid order for Sunday’s grand prix.

“It is fantastic news that Silverstone will be a full capacity event and it will be an incredible weekend with hundreds of thousands of fans being there to see our first ever Sprint event on the Saturday and the main event on Sunday,” F1 president Stefano Domenicali said.

“All of the drivers and the teams are hugely looking forward to Silverstone and we can’t wait to be there in July.”

The circuit says it will announce further conditions for those who are eligible to attend the race in July, working closely with the ERP experts and the Director of Public Health in Northamptonshire.
