After the gripping drama of Baku, Formula 1 heads to Marina Bay this weekend for the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix — a race which has a habit of generating its own unpredictable moments.

Although Singapore is seven hours ahead of the UK, its night sessions mean that you won’t need to set your alarm clock for any of the sessions. British viewers can watch all of the track action live on Sky Sports F1, with cars rolling out of the pitlane for FP1 at 10.30am on Friday, followed by qualifying on Saturday at 2pm and the Singapore GP on Sunday at 1pm. Channel 4 will also be providing highlights of the weekend on terrestrial television, which race fans can watch without a subscription.

Since making its first appearance on the F1 calendar in 2008, the Marina Bay has been one of the harshest challenges that drivers and teams will face in the season. Racing under the lights, the field will navigate its way through a concoction of high-G turns while also battling the oppressive heat and accompanying humidity, which can cause drivers to lose over 5kg in bodyweight over the race distance.

McLaren arrives from a brilliant Oscar Piastri race win in Azerbaijan. But with Ferrari in close pursuit; Sergio Perez in resurgent form; Max Verstappen hoping for bounce back performance; and Mercedes a contender too, could the Woking outfit’s lead in the constructors’ standing be under threat already?

To find out, here’s how to watch all the racing action.

Singapore GP circuit and details

The Marina Bay circuit went through numerous revisions ahead of the 2023 Singapore GP which not only made it faster, but provided plenty of intrigue too.

Ongoing construction work means that Turns 16 to 19 will once again be bypassed. The removal of the section known as the grandstand chicane gives drivers a straight run from Turn 15 to the final section before the start-finish straight. Last year, this created more overtaking chances.

The 3.06-mile circuit will this year have an additional DRS zone on that run from Turn 15, in addition to the three DRS zones from last year: one exiting Turn 5 onto the circuit’s first proper straight; the next from the run down to Turn 14; and the final one on the start/finish straight itself — which keeps the field close together and promotes passing opportunities, predominately in Turns 1 and 7.

Being a street circuit, qualifying high up the grid is often the key to success, with the last four winners of the Singapore GP all starting from the front row. But drivers and teams will need to be quick on their feet throughout the 63-lap race, as the high probability of a safety car appearance could throw a spanner into the works of any thought-out strategy. As could the weather…

What’s the weather in Singapore this weekend?

The forecast for the 2024 Singapore GP expected to be mostly dry, with an average temperature of 32 degrees celsius across the weekend.

Although heavy rain showers and thunderstorms are forecast to cover the circuit during the day, it is expected to clear by Friday’s free practice running which is set to take place under dense clouds, with only a 4% chance of wet weather.

An almost identical weather forecast is predicted for Saturday and Sunday, with low chances of rain, cloud cover remaining and temperatures set to reach 32C with 70% humidity on race day.
