Is another Verstappen masterclass destined for the Dutch GP?

Red Bull

The F1 circus has had four weeks to recuperate after the summer break, but now gets ready to go full throttle for the last ten races of the season — with the action beginning at Zandvoort.

The seaside amphitheatre of speed has been host to the Dutch Grand Prix since 1952, and is almost always packed with fervent fans — a wall of orange in passionate support of home favourite Max Verstappen. But, if recent races have been any indication, the Dutchman will have plenty of competition in the race to the top step.

Viewers in the UK will be able to watch every session live on Sky Sports F1, with FP1 marking the start of on-track activity at 12.30pm on Friday, followed by qualifying on Saturday at 2pm and the Dutch GP on Sunday at 2pm. Channel 4 will also be providing highlights of the weekend on terrestrial television, which race fans can watch for free.

Although Verstappen is yet to lose a race on home soil since Zandvoort’s return to the F1 calendar in 2021, its narrow and twisty layout could better suit McLaren or Ferrari — two teams which have performed well at a street-like circuits in Hungary, Miami, Imola and Monaco.

Mercedes could also be a great threat to Dutch hopes of a fourth consecutive hometown winner, with Lewis Hamilton and George Russell claiming three out of the last four races before F1’s summer break. Will the front-running form of the Brackley outfit continue upon F1’s return? Or will Red Bull and McLaren continue their race for the constructors’ title?

Here’s how to watch the Dutch GP.

After sprints have featured over the last few rounds, Zandvoort will be a more usual race weekend format, with two sessions of practice on Friday, another on Saturday followed by qualifying and the race on Sunday.

Each minute of every F1 session will be broadcast live in the UK, for paying subscribers only.

The onboard streams are also available on TV, as is a ‘Battle Channel’ offering split-screen coverage of the best fights for position.

It also offers onboard views of each driver through in-app bonus streams for monthly subscribers. These can be viewed concurrently with the main stream on a separate screen.

Dutch GP circuit and details

The Zandvoort was an original mainstay of the world championship in its early years, having been opened the same year at Silverstone in 1948 and remained the host of the Dutch GP until 1985 – when newer GPs squeezed it out of the running.

Come 2021 though, and the immense popularity of Max Verstappen made the return of the circuit a no-brainer, and it’s been a roaring success ever since.

A literal stones throw away from the North Sea, the tight, flowing 2.64-mile circuit has a unique character which F1 drivers adore and its 14 turns often provide plenty of action for fans sat trackside.

Due to its confined nature, Zandvoort only has two DRS zones with overtaking chances reduced to a minimum throughout the Grand Prix’s 72-lap duration – although a driver’s greatest chances are often in the run down to Turn 1 or through the banked hairpin at Turn 3.

What’s the weather in Zandvoort this weekend?

Situated close to the North Sea, Zandvoort can often have its own micro-climate, with scorching temperatures one day and torrential rain the next. 2024 looks to to be no different, with a sunny Friday practice followed by intermittent rain on Saturday – which could effect the qualifying order.

Sunday’s Grand Prix is forecast to remain dry and cool, with an average temperature of just 22 degrees celsius and only 10mph winds.
