Under penalty pressure, will Magnussen soon face a one-race ban?

The penalty point system was first introduced into Formula 1 in 2014 as a deterrent from dangerous driving by competitors, not only in the race but also across qualifying and practice sessions.

Points are given for transgressions such as causing an incident, dangerously blocking another competitor or driving in an unsafe manner in the pitlane.

If a driver reaches 12 points they will be suspended for one race, after which the tally is set to 0. Points also expire after 12 months.

Following a clash with Pierre Gasly in Monza, Kevin Magnussen became the first driver to ever reach the 12 point maximum and will therefore miss the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Red Bull‘s Sergio Perez is also nearing the limit after an eventual end to the 2023 season saw him collate seven penalty points — a tally he’s since added to after an unsafe pit release at the 2024 Saudi Arabian GP.

See our table below for how many points each driver has and what they were awarded for.

Although the vast majority of the current grid have at least one penalty point to their name, there are still a handful of drivers who have managed to keep a clean record.

This includes Williams’ Alex Albon, Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, RB’s Yuki Tsunoda, Sauber’s Zhou Guanyu and McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

Former Williams driver Logan Sargeant — who was replaced midway through the 2024 F1 season — is the only inactive driver to still posses penalty points on their FIA superlicence.

The American earned eight penalty points throughout his first year and a half in Formula 1 for numerous transgressions including causing collisions, failing to comply with yellow flag during qualifying and overtaking under the safety car.
