Daniel Ricciardo has said he is prepared to take a sabbatical from Formula 1 should the right opportunity not present itself for 2023.

On Wednesday, ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix, McLaren announced an agreement with Ricciardo to terminate his contract a year early following a run of disappointing results.

The eight-time grand prix winner is currently without a drive for next season and has reiterated that he’s only focused on F1 — if the right seat is available.

“F1 is what I love and it’s where I see myself if I’m doing any racing,” he said in the driver press conference ahead of this weekend’s Belgian GP.

“But if, let’s say, the stars don’t align and it doesn’t make perfect sense next year and if it means taking that time off to kind of reset or reevaluate then if that’s the right thing to do, then I’m willing.”

Ricciardo said that the need to stay competitive within F1 that is the driving factor behind his thought, and he has no wish to languish at the back.

Williams, Haas and Alfa Romeo are all yet to confirm their 2023 lineup, but Alpine looks to be his best bet of staying towards the front with Esteban Ocon’s next team-mate not yet known.

Where does Daniel Ricciardo go next after McLaren?

McLaren is soon expected to announce Daniel Ricciardo will leave the team at the end of the season. He's been linked with a US move, but Chris Medland sayshe'll find it hard to leave F1 — and there's set to be a seat on the grid that will fit him perfectly

“I still love the sport and I think through all of this adversity I haven’t lost that confidence in myself,” Ricciardo added.

“For sure we’ve had some tough weekends and you can’t help but show emotion sometimes but I still love it and want to do it competitively.

“I want to do it in the right place, I’ve never said I want to just be a driver to make up the numbers, if I’m here I want to be here for a purpose.

“So I don’t know what that means yet for the future but of course, if it’s the right opportunity then this is where I want to be.”

Ricciardo spoke about the effort he put in to make his time at McLaren successful but admitted that “some things are just not meant to be.”

Despite his struggles, he remains one of the most respected drivers on the grid with Lewis Hamilton saying Ricciardo deserves to be in F1.

Sebastian Vettel, who was once team-mates with Ricciardo, then added to that saying whatever happens for the Australian, it will work itself out in the end.

“I think he’s still one of the best drivers,” said the four-time world champion, who will retire from F1 at the end of this season.

“I had the pleasure to race against him and the not so pleasurable side of getting beaten by him years ago and I still think he has very, very much to offer.

“I wish him obviously all the best and I’m sure that, ultimately, the talent he has and the qualities he has will shine through.”
