Striking in its white and lime livery, the Brawn GP 001 is an F1 car which stands out in history.

Winning on its 2009 debut as the team rose from the ashes of the Honda grand prix project, Jenson Button and Brawn came back from the brink to claim a memorable title double that year.

Now, a Brawn 001 from that season recently owned by ’09 champ Button is set to be auctioned at this year’s Miami GP.

The car is just one of three to exist, and represents a moment of true F1 ingenuity.

The team had been saved by a Ross Brawn-led group after Honda initially decided to close the concern in the wake of the 2008 recession, the former Ferrari technical director buying the team for £1.

Though many staff had to be laid off while the outfit was run on a budget through the 2009 season, the 001 car featured the innovative double diffuser design, which gave it an edge over most of the field.

With Honda looking to make up for its dreadful 2007 and 2008 cars, it had abandoned the latter year to focus on ’09. As a result, and despite Honda pulling out, the 001 was also well-developed in all other areas, meaning the rest of the grid had some serious catching up to do when the season got underway.

“The problem was we didn’t really know how quick it was,” Button told Motor Sport of initial tests. “We had all our simulations of what the car should do and we looked at the first test – which we weren’t at, we missed it. We hadn’t even shaken down the car yet.

“And when we saw the lap times from that first test we thought ‘Oh no, we’ve got our simulation wrong because it’s saying we’d be 1.5sec faster than that’. Then we turned up in Barcelona and on the first run were 0.6sec quicker than anyone…”

Button would win six of the first seven races that year. Though the competition, particularly Red Bull, would edge closer throughout 2009 as Brawn’s lack of budget told, Button held on to take a memorable championship win in Brazil that season. The team was then sold to Mercedes for 2010.

The Brit was gifted team-mate Rubens Barrichello’s 001/01 chassis as part of a clause in his contract, but the car changed hands from Button to a private owner last year. Barrichello claimed 2009 podiums in Australia, Spain, Monaco and Silverstone using chassis 001/01, and would go on to score two wins in the spare, 001/03.

Button has sold a number of his cars from his private collection since retiring from F1 in 2016, including his Porsche Carrera GT (which went for £700k) and a 964 turbo (£315k).

No estimate or reserve has been given on 001/01 by Bonhams. For relative comparison, Lewis Hamilton’s 2010 McLaren F1 car sold for £4.8m in 2021.

The car and team’s story is as unlikely as it is captivating, Brawn’s underdog triumph was the subject of a Keanu Reeves-fronted Disney documentary last year.

“This car represents the ultimate Formula 1 fairy tale – a revolutionary design that redefined what was possible,” says Bonhams’ Louis Frankel. “Chassis 001/01 is a piece of motor sport history, and its offering at auction is sure to captivate collectors worldwide.”

Since the 2009 championship win, many of Brawn’s core team had more success after it morphed into Mercedes, with an unprecedented seven-year title double run from 2014 to 2020. Brawn strategist James Vowels is now Williams team boss, while engine guru Andy Cowell recently moved to head up Aston Martin.

The Bonhams Miami Auction will be held on May 3. More information can be found here.
