Here's everything you need to know about Brad Pitt's new F1 film, including details on the plot, the cast, trailers, the release date and Lewis Hamilton's involvement
A new trailer for Brad Pitt’s F1 film has now been released, showing more on-track scenes from the film.
With Pitt behind the wheel, his fictional Apex grand prix team car fights it out with Red Bull and Alpine machines at Silverstone, Spa-Francorchamps and Las Vegas.
Even more sparse than the ‘teaser’ trailer which was released prior to the 2024 British GP in the summer, the sequence features almost no dialogue (save for a late, faint interjection from Sky F1 commentator David Croft), but plenty of crashes, flames which look reminiscent of Romain Grosjean’s Bahrain 2021 shunt and wheel banging – as well as brief off-track appearances from Pitt, and on-screen manager/team owner played by Javier Bardem.
Over the ’24 British GP weekend, many details were confirmed about Brad Pitt’s new groundbreaking Formula 1 film.
With filming now finished — with both Pitt and the fictional APXGP team spotted at several races in 2023 and in 2024 — the Apple Original Films picture has a confirmed release date of June 25 2025 and with the initial short teaser trailer showing off several cameos from some of F1’s most familiar faces.
Lewis Hamilton has been on-board as a producer since the early stages and has aided director Joseph Kosinski — whose most recent work includes the award-winning Tom Cruise picture Top Gun: Maverick — in making the film as authentic as possible.
F1 film crews have been spotted at multiple races across 2023 and 2024 — starting at the 2023 British Grand Prix, where Pitt and Idris where filmed during the national anthem (which is also a detail that can be spotted in the trailer) as well as inside their own pit garage.
Despite a lengthy strike by the Screen Actors Guild and Writers Guild of America, filming continued in Las Vegas, Abu Dhabi and at Silverstone once more, as F1’s newest partnership with Hollywood continues to race toward the scheduled release date in 2025.

Released over the 2024 British Grand Prix weekend, the first teaser trailer for F1 not only gave us our first glimpse of Brad Pitt acting as an old-school racer Sonny Hayes, Damson Idris as his young APXGP team-mate Joshua Pierce and Javier Bardem as their seemingly flamboyant team-boss, but it also showed off some of the on-track footage which has been collated through numerous non-race weekend sessions as well as at real-life grands prix.
The teaser also aimed to provide a few subtle hints at some major movie plot points, with APXGP cars seen skidding off the track into gravel traps as well as competing in heated intra-team battles at Silverstone.
The plot
As has been detailed by Brad Pitt and subsequently confirmed during the first teaser trailer, F1 will focus prominently around the APXGP team and its two drivers: Sonny Hayes (played by Pitt) and young phenom Joshua Pierce (played by Damson Idris).
Hayes is a senior figure in the paddock and had raced in 1990s before a huge crash sent him into a premature retirement. Years later, APXGP’s team owner, played by Javier Bardem, convinces Hayes into a return to the sport, to both mentor Pierce and save his team after years of running at the back.

Footage in F1’s first teaser trailer suggests that over the course of the season both Hayes and Pierce come to blows, both on and off-track, on several occasions. A number of crash scenes have been filmed at Silverstone over the last two years, suggesting that the home of the British Grand Prix could play major role in the movie.
Since then another sequence with one driver staggering post-crash down the Las Vegas start/finish straight, as well as race and podium scenes with George Russell and Charles Leclerc in Abu Dhabi have been completed.
Filming in Daytona early in 2024 also indicated that in between his F1 drives Hayes took part in other championships behind the wheel of a Porsche 911, before deciding on a dramatic F1 come back.
The cast
Much of the F1 cast is yet to be decided with only a few confirmed roles on the film’s official IMDB page. But as is evident from the trailer, the plot will focus mainly around Brad Pitt and Damon Idris, with appearances from other renowned actors such as Javier Bardem, Tobias Menzies and Kerry Condon.
Having filmed at real-life grand prix, there will likely be many cameos from current Formula 1 drivers and team principals, with Guenther Steiner, Max Verstappen, Sergio Perez, Fernando Alonso, Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc spotted in the trailer. Producer Lewis Hamilton is also expected to make an appearance, and even admitted to have “taken acting lessons” in preparation for his small cameo.

The cars
The APXGP cars have already run at multiple F1 races, including the Italian GP at Monza
F1 will focus around the APXGP Formula 1 team, a fictional eleventh outfit which is currently struggling at the rear of the current field.
Although they may share many similarities to the other cars on the grid – including its black and gold livery as well as a variety of sponsor stickers from Tommy Hilfiger, MSC Cruises and AMG Mercedes – both APXGP cars are in fact modified F2 cars which have been adapted by Mercedes.
These have then been fitted with an array of mounted cameras which have been used to capture the on-board footage of both Pitt and Idris behind the wheel – which can be seen in the teaser trailer – as well as some of the wheel-to-wheel battle shots. Both actors have shared the driving duties with traditional stunt drivers for some of the more high-speed scenes.
To complete the full F1 team aesthetic, the APXGP team have also been given a full size pit garage – which was situated between McLaren and Mercedes during the British Grand Prix in 2024 — as well as a pit wall where team members can be seen sat analysing tyre data and talking directly to the drivers.
What part has Lewis Hamilton played?
As an official producer for the F1 movie, Lewis Hamilton and his Dawn Apollo production company has played a pivotal role in the making of F1’s latest feature film.
“He’s the first person I contacted three years ago,” director Kosinski told Deadline. “I knew for us to make it as authentic as possible, someone on the team who lives it day-in and day-out would be invaluable.
“Lewis has been an incredible partner; he jumps on Zooms with me between races to go through the script, line by line, turn by turn, you know, tire compound by tyre compound, to make sure that we are getting all the details right. Beyond that, on a creative and story level, he also has input.”
Hamilton also played a role in selecting cast members – including Damson Idris – and has been involved in the shooting of footage at grand prix events: controlling frame rates as well as suggesting the best spots for camera placements.
Directors, writers and producers
With CGI playing a major role in F1 – in an attempt to replicate the feeling of speed that only F1 cars can produce – the film is being directed by Joseph Kosinski who most recently worked with Tom Cruise on the academy award nominated picture Top Gun: Maverick.
Jerry Bruckheimer – responsible for Pirates of the Carribean, the original Top Gun and 1990 NASCAR film Days of Thunder – will partner Kosinski as an executive producer, alongside Hamilton and Pitt.
Which circuits will be included in F1?

The APXGP team has been spotted at numerous F1 venues, both during grand prix weekends and on private track dates.
Silverstone could play a central role – with many on and off-track shots being taken throughout the 2023 and 2024 British Grand Prix º as could races in Las Vegas and Abu Dhabi, where the team were spotted filming.
The teaser trailer also featured racing action at Spa, the Hungaroring, and Monza.
Shooting during the 2024 Daytona 24 Hours, where Pitt filmed scenes behind the wheel of a Porsche 911, also suggests that the legendary American race way will also make an appearance.
