The Adrian Newey story: told by Motor Sport
Adrian Newey has been at the forefront of F1 design for over forty years – Motor Sport celebrates one of grand prix racing's greatest car designers
Adrian Newey has revolutionised the way F1 engineers, drivers and fans think about grand prix racing – and become the sport’s most successful car designer while doing so.
First beginning in the 1980s when monstrous turbo cars with huge front and rear wings were de rigeur, Newey’s preference for small, nimble, tightly-packaged cars married up perfectly with the incoming V10 F1 era.
This has manifested itself at Leyton House, Williams and McLaren, but can still be seen today in the aggressive packaging of his final Red Bull F1 car, the RB20.
Newey’s results speak for themselves: 12 constructors’ titles, 13 drivers’ crowns, and 220 F1 wins far outstrip any other leading designer in the sport’s history.
His forty years at the forefront of grand prix racing means his longevity is unmatched too, the designer able to implement his genius through several eras of F1.
Newey the man is just as multi-faceted as the engineer, and the leading designer has spoken to Motor Sport several times to dig deeper into what makes one of racing’s greatest minds tick – looking back on his formative years, driving his own favourite cars and talking about others he admires too.
