MotoGP returns from its month-long summer break for a weekend of racing action at Silverstone – the home of the British Grand Prix.

Ducati‘s Francesco Bagnaia will head into the eighth round of the 2023 campaign hoping to extend his advantage at the top of the rider standings, currently having a 35-point lead over VR46 Racing’s Jorge Martin.

The Italian has been in imperious form throughout the first half of the season – securing four key grand prix victories – but racing at Silverstone will kickstart a new challenge for the grid, with an updated qualifying format set to run.

From the British Grand Prix onwards, riders will compete in an untimed practice session on Friday morning (known as Free Practice 1), followed by a another practice session in the afternoon, in which the ten fastest riders will progress straight to Q2. There will then be a second free practice session before qualifying on Saturday, which will set the grid for both races.

The results of the change will only be seen once MotoGP gets back on track – here’s how you can catch all the weekend action.

How to watch MotoGP: live stream and TV details for 2023 British Grand Prix

For viewers in the UK, the 2023 MotoGP British Grand Prix was originally meant to be aired on ITV for the third consecutive year but has since been dropped – now reserving its free-to-air coverage for the last race of the season in Valencia instead. Luckily there are other channels that will broadcast the action live, alongside several online streaming platforms.

Live TV: TNT Sports (formerly BT Sport) will broadcast all sessions live, starting with Free Practice on Friday at 10.45am. If you do not currently have a monthly plan with TNT Sports, weekend passes are available.

Live stream: The MotoGP VideoPass is a great alternative to live TV, providing on-demand coverage of every GP session on any of your devices, be it TV, laptop, tablet or phone.

Highlights: Race highlights will be available on ITV4, with race round-ups from previous grand prix available on ITVX.

British GP circuit details and weather forecast

Before 1977, the only British round on the MotoGP calendar was dedicated to the Isle of Man TT, but when organisers wanted to race on British mainland instead of at the dangerous road race, there was only one place to go – Silverstone.

Utilising the full 3.6-mile GP layout, riders can reach speeds of up to 212mph, making it one of the fastest grand prix circuits of the year, with several overtaking opportunities located throughout the lap.

The weather should make things even more interesting, with rainfall expected throughout Saturday’s qualifying and sprint sessions as well as Sunday’s race.

Who will win the 2023 MotoGP British GP?

If he is able to maintain his incredible current form at the British GP, Bagnaia will be well on his way toward a likely riders’ world championship. Winning two of the last three grand prix ahead of the summer break, while finishing in the top two in the last three sprint races, the Italian will be the favourite to take the chequered flag on Sunday afternoon – but there will be challengers.

Third-placed Marco Bezzecchi was on top form at the Dutch GP and could emerge as a longshot contender should the leading Italian suddenly begin to fall short. Bezzecchi won the Ducth TT Sprint before scoring second in Sunday’s Grand Prix, adding to an already impressive 2023 campaign.

Similarly, Prima‘s Jorge Martin has finished inside the top five riders for five consecutive races, making him a prime candidate to pounce on a mistake at the front of the field and capture his second victory of the season should the poor weather conditions cause chaos to ensue!

2023 MotoGP British GP support races

This weekend’s MotoGP action will also be accompanied by a full bill of support races including talent from Moto2, Moto3 and MotoE.

The battle for the title in Moto2 remains tight, with Tony Arbolino and Pedro Acosta separated by juts eight points at the top of the standings, followed by local Briton Jake Dixon – hoping to reign in the leaders on home soil after a victory at Assen.

In Moto3, things are as equally tense. Spaniard Daniel Holgado has won three of the seven races so far this season and currently holds a 16-point lead over Jaume Masia in the rider standings. But Ayumu Sasaki, Ivan Ortola, and Deniz Öncü are all well within reach of the title as the second half of the 2023 campaign kicks off.

The MotoE championship aims to bring something a little different for attending fans but has had no less excitement in 2023. Riding electric Ducati’s with over 150bhp and lightning quick acceleration speeds, fights at the front of the field are frequent and have resulted in a close two-way battle for the championship so far. Leader Jordi Torres and Matteo Ferrari were split by just eight points headed into the summer break, and will look to continue their battle at Silverstone.
