Mystery of the Goodwood lap record: nobody knows what it is

Goodwood's SpeedWeek festival in 2020 saw sports cars, supercars and prototypes roll onto the Goodwood circuit for a no-holds-barred timed shootout, with all eyes on the timing screen to see…

This year celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Ford Mustang, which is aptly marked by the Ken Miles Cup: a race which features 30 of the V8-powered muscle cars taking tours of the Goodwood Motor Circuit for 45 minutes of non-stop action.

One of the demonstration runs will be a tribute to the late great Niki Lauda, featuring his very own 1984 title-winning McLaren MP4/2B which will take to the circuit in memory of the former 3-time F1 world champion. In keeping with the F1 theme, Gerhard Berger will also be put behind the wheel of his 1989 Ferrari 640 — which he drove to a dominant victory at the Portuguese Grand Prix — and Gordon Murray Automotive will return to the Members’ Meeting this year with his newest supercar creation in tow: a track-only version of the V12-powered GMA T.50s which will make its dynamic debut at the hands of IndyCar legend Dario Franchitti.

But aside from just single-car demonstration runs, there is also a full schedule of races to get through, which includes the renamed Gordon Spice Trophy for ’70s and ’80s saloon cars, the S.F. Edge Trophy for pre-war machines, and the Derek Bell Cup which usually features fascinating wheel-to-wheel action between 1,000cc Formula 3 cars built between 1964 and 1970. A star-studded line-up of drivers can also be expected, with the likes of David Brabham, Jamie Chadwick, Jochen Mass, Tom Kristensen and Alex Brundle all set to take to the Goodwood Circuit across the weekend in multiple categories.
