Former Le Mans winner and veteran Formula 1 racer Stefan Johansson is one of thirty artists featured at London’s Art of Motoring exhibition next week, as the automotive art showcase celebrates its tenth year.

Run in association with the Royal Automobile Club and curated by Motor Sport contributor Andrew Marriott, the show at London’s Iconic Images Gallery is free to enter and includes a range of works that bring more than a century of motor racing to life in a range of styles.

Johansson — one of two non-British artists to have their work featured — turned to art almost 50 years ago when his close friend Elio de Angelis was killed at Paul Ricard.

These days the Swede, who has studios in Chelsea and Los Angeles splits his time between managing various Indycar drivers including Scott Dixon, and his popular paintings – usually on large scale canvasses.

He has tried various styles including portraiture of the likes of Ayrton Senna and Bernie Ecclestone with a twist, as well as abstract “bomb blast” paintings but this year is concentrating on pointillist Formula 1 works in the style of French impressionist painter Georges Seurat.

The Exhibition will be held in London’s Iconic Images Gallery at 16 Waterloo Place, London SW1Y 4AR. It opens on Wednesday October 30 at 2pm until 5pm and then for the following three days from 11am until 5pm.

The Gallery is just off Pall Mall where, on Saturday November 2, the street will be shut for a major new car show which is also part of the Royal Automobile Club’s London Motor Week.

Amongst the other artists will be the legendary Dexter Brown who is exhibiting in public for the first time in several years with paintings depicting Ayrton Senna and the pre-War Auto Unions in his popular impressionist style.

This year there has been a proliferation of female motoring artists in the collection, perhaps most striking, the blow-ups of press and other passes for classic races by Ella Friere – who also exhibited this year at Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.
