Brad Pitt stars as Apex F1 movie films at British GP
Pitts Apex F1 movie sends British GP crowds into a frenzy as filming continues at Silverstonea
Lewis Hamilton reckons the forthcoming Formula 1 movie starring Brad Pitt could have an even bigger impact on grand prix racing than Netflix’s divisive Drive to Survive series.
Filming for the as-yet untitled film began during the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, with organisers preparing a garage for the fictional Apex GP, and the updated Formula 2 car, right, that is being used for the shoots hitting the track in the run-up to the race weekend in its black and gold livery.
The new film aims to recreate the F1 experience in a manner that carries modern echoes of John Frankenheimer’s Grand Prix, which famously used cameras tagged on to cars running during F1 weekends in the mid-1960s.
Hamilton is serving as a producer and adviser to the film crew, and admitted to having nerves ahead of seeing the car run for the first time.
“It’s massively exciting to see it all coming together,” he said. “There are nerves, because we’ve been working on it for so long and we want everyone to love it and to really feel that we encapsulate the essence of what this sport is all about.
“We’ve already seen the great work and impact of the Netflix show, and I think this will take it to new heights. There’s so many people around the world excited about this sport and wanting to learn more.”
The film is being directed by Joseph Kosinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, the pair who recently worked on Top Gun: Maverick. Pitt plays Sonny Hayes, a driver returning to the sport to help the ailing Apex GP team alongside young team-mate Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris).
