In Brief, September 2010
• The FIA is considering a licensing system for team members, which will allow it to hand out direct sanctions. That has not been possible previously, which is why in the case of Flavio Briatore and Pat Symonds last year the WMSC instead threatened penalties against teams, drivers or circuits who had anything to do with the former Renault men.
• Pat Fry started work at Ferrari on July 1 in the role of assistant technical director. Fry, 46, left McLaren earlier this year after 18 years with the team that saw him in a variety of frontline engineering roles.
• Lotus Racing boss Tony Fernandes is acquiring the rights to the Team Lotus name, which will allow him to formally rebadge his operation next season. The name has been owned by David Hunt and two other investors since the end of the 1994 season.
• The Royal Mail issued a commemorative set of stamps to celebrate 10 British F1 World Champions ahead of July’s British Grand Prix. The stamps, featuring Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton, Damon Hill, Nigel Mansell, James Hunt, Jackie Stewart, Jim Clark, John Surtees, Graham Hill and Mike Hawthorn, are available from the Royal Mail and on eBay.
• As little as three points separate Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton and Mark Webber in the BRDC Gold Star Points for 2010. The trio are more than 20 points ahead of fourth-placed WTCC BMW driver Andy Priaulx.
• Colour footage of the inaugural World Championship Grand Prix at Silverstone in 1950 has gone on sale for the first time. A DVD has been made from the footage, found in the National Film Archive, but only 500 copies are going on sale. They cost £15 and can be ordered from www.gomw.co.uk/cart/catalogue.
