...And so it should be
Sir,
Bravo! Mark Hughes’ attempt to rank the all-time top 100 drivers of the century makes fascinating reading. Whilst at first I was tempted to reply with a tirade of abuse that he should relegate Graham Hill, Hermann Lang and Robert Benoist to the lower orders, it dawned on me there is no empirical method of comparing drivers from different eras. Mark’s idea is an opinion born of his enthusiasm and I applaud the series wholeheartedly. Spurred by this, and in a few idle moments, I tried to list my top ten… which becomes 20 because I couldn’t exclude some of my heroes. Here goes:
1, Nuvolari. 2, Fangio. 3, Moss. 4, Clark. 5, Senna. 6, Caracciola. 7, Rosemeyer. 8, Boillot 9, Peterson. 10, Ascari. 11 Schumacher (M). 12, Thery. 13, Lang. 14, Wimille. 15, Nazzaro. 16, Gurney. 17, Villeneuve. 18, Hill (G). 19, Benoist. 20, Chiron.
I am sure you will be deluged with alternative choices and I look forward to reading about them in coming months.
I am, yours, etc. Chris Willows, Wokingham, Berkshire
