Cart, not fart

Sir,

No, Mr Whittle (Letters, August 1999) is not a boring old fart. Anyone born in the ’40s or earlier cannot fail to be bored stiff by F1 today.

It is about time the BBC raided their archives and put on a second showing of the 1971 Italian GP at Monza won by Peter Gethin’s BRM by 0.01sec in a four-car dash to the line!

The only alternative open to Mr Whittle is to buy a satellite dish and watch the CART (Indy) cars on circuits like Road America which has a four-mile lap. Here you can watch a good race with 900 horsepower, narrow slicks and drivers changing gear and most importantly, overtaking by outbraking at the end of 180mph straights!

If Silverstone does lose the British GP to Brands Hatch they have the ready answer by inviting the CART teams back. I am sure that Honda, Toyota, Mercedes and Ford would grab the chance.

I am, yours, etc. Grahame Page, Taunton, Somerset
