Bentleys at Montlhery

How pleasant to read again Tom Plowman’s notes on his Montlhery runs (Motor Sport, July 1989). A very decent chap Tom, against whom I had the pleasure of competing a number of times in the 19505. Eheu fugaces! In the interests of historical accuracy, may I say that! have never holed a piston. It was Burton who did so, the combination of an ambitious or and 94-octane fuel proving incompatible in 1960. In 1959 my engine suffered a drastic piston seizure, causing a con-rod to become bowed. This was a disappointment, occurring as it did after some 40 minutes running, lapping at 114 mph with a best lap at 116.8 mph.
