Diesel delight
Sir,
We read a lot about Mercedes Benz in MOTOR SPORT but I have never seen very much about their diesel models. I have a 1961 190Db which has now covered 32,000 miles. As you know, it weighs over 2,600 lb. and it can seat six in comfort. The log book reveals that it has averaged 41.8 m.p.g. and the engine uses a pint of oil in 2,000 miles.
On a long trip one can expect to get about 44 m.p.g. which, with the 12-gallon tank, gives an effective range of about 500 miles. To date I have had to replace one rear axle oil seal, a water pump, a battery, a fanbelt and a set of tyres. It is said that diesels are sluggish but with acceleration as good as a 1200 VW and a top speed of 75 m.p.h. I have no complaints.
I am, needless to say, a very satisfied customer.
Leatherhead.
