Jaguar sharpens its claws
Jaguar’s return to Formula E reached new heights in 2024, overcoming setbacks to secure four wins, 10 podiums, and its first championship title since 1991.
In December 2015 at London’s Shard, soon-to-be Jaguar team principal James Barclay spoke amid a throng of media on a return to international motor sport. The ‘Big Cat’, which was the first pukka manufacturer to sign up to Formula E, ticked off milestones such as first points (at Mexico City in 2017), first pole (Zürich in 2018), podium (Hong Kong, 2018) and win (at Rome, 2019). But a title had been elusive as it entered 2024.
Then, on the cusp of last season, it lost one of its key personnel in Phil Charles, a formative figure in building Jaguar’s technical team. He went to rivals DS Penske to work with former Toro Rosso charge Jean-Éric Vergne.
It was a testament to the strength of what Jaguar has built at its new HQ in Kidlington, just a stone’s throw from the old TWR base, that they pivoted so well. 2024 proved to be, by far, its best season in Formula E, with four victories, 10 other podiums and enough points to take a well-deserved teams’ title, Jaguar’s first since Teo Fabi and Silk Cut Jaguar scooped the 1991 World Sportscar Championship double.
“I’m so proud of what this team has achieved this year,” Barclay says. “The car has been phenomenal and the teamwork has been phenomenal.
“It’s incredible that Jaguar are back on the top step of the podium against giants like Porsche and I think we really punch well above our weight”.
