Jake Dennis crowned Formula E World Champion
First British world champion in all-electric Formula E series
Britain has a new FIA world champion. Jake Dennis, 28, became the first British driver to conquer the electric-powered Formula E championship, requiring just the first race of the London double-header finale in July to secure his crown.
The Nuneaton-born driver, who races for Michael Andretti’s Porsche-powered team, arrived at the ExCel Arena 24 points ahead of main rival Nick Cassidy after the Kiwi had been taken out of the previous round in Rome by countryman Mitch Evans. Dennis finished the chaotic Saturday round as runner-up to Jaguar’s Evans, which was enough to become champion after Cassidy picked up damage in a collision with his Envision team-mate Sébastien Buemi. There was some consolation for Cassidy, who dominated the Sunday race to secure the teams’ championship for Jaguar-powered Envision.
Dennis also becomes the first champion of Formula E’s Gen3 era, in a series that has gained in power and spectacle this year. Cassidy and Evans both won four races each to Dennis’s two, but a string of podiums made up for the champion’s four-race barren streak on points.
The 10th season of Formula E will kick off in Mexico on January 13, 2024. Cassidy will line up with Evans at Jaguar in place of Sam Bird who has signed for McLaren. Stepping back into Envision will be Robin Frijns after a difficult year at Abt Cupra.
