John Surtees’ ’69 BRM back in public view: Dealer news
• Last spotted at the Weston-super-Mare Speed Trials in 1973 and kept away from the public gaze since, BRM P139-01, above, was raced in six F1 GPs in 1969. Its finest moment was the US GP at Watkins Glen when it was piloted by John Surtees to third place. It’s now in William I’Anson’s Cotswolds showroom, £POA – and in the same condition as the day it was driven in ’73.
• In 1985, former F1 world champion Alan Jones was lured out of retirement to join the Beatrice Food-backed Haas team. Its racing car, currently on sale with Oldtimer Australia in Brisbane, was the Lola-Hart THL1. It ran in six GPs in 1985 and ’86 but never reached the finish line. It’s still in fine fettle with a rebuilt Hart 415T engine and has raced in 26 events since 2006.
• Insurance company LV= has gazed into its crystal ball to reveal that 31% of used cars in 2030 will be electric, up from 2% in 2021, which should drive competition and lower prices. Gill Nowell, LV=’s head of EV, said: “Price is one of the big barriers for people considering making the switch [to EV], which is why these projections are so encouraging.”
• Lauded by our own Andrew Frankel recently [Allez maintenant!, July], the superb A110 has given Alpine a 70% increase in sales worldwide in the first half of 2022 with 1710 units sold. In the UK, its sales rose 67%, with 171 cars sold in six months.
• The Newcastle United-sponsored Lister Storm that was driven to the FIA GT title by Jamie Campbell-Walter and Julian Bailey in 2000, above, is at Fiskens, £POA – and race ready. Its 7-litre V12 packed a punch not unlike an Alan Shearer right-footer.
