“It was a good sale, particularly with the road cars,” Silverstone Auctions told Motor Sport after its Silverstone Classic sale on July 21. “Race cars seem to be suffering in this market, though, and we’d love to know why.”

Many failed to sell including the ex-Watson and Tambay 1979 McLaren M28, the exSchumacher and Brundle 1992 Benetton B192 and a 1973 BMW 3-litre CSL `Batmobile’. One suggestion was that it’s not just the purchase price that’s deterring potential buyers, but the cost of running such cars competitively.
