Bad Bentley buy
The article concerning the Bentley 8-litre (August) brought back memories for me. During the 1930s and ’40s I lived around Welwyn, where there was a garage specialising in these big Bentleys, and I paid them the huge sum of £50 for a convertible version of the 8-litre. It was a pig to drive, and I never managed to raise the hood and keep it there. After a couple of weeks the OC of the army depot offered me £52 10/-, which I grabbed!
From the proceeds I bought a magnificent Armstrong Siddeley 30hp limousine for £24 from the Queen Mother’s household at St Paul’s Walden. It never gave a moment’s trouble. John D Healbuck. Poole, Dorset
