Redman enjoys another blue sky day in California

Monterey Classic: Laguna Seca

The biggest historic motor-racing festival outside Europe drew a record 400-car entry to Laguna Seca for the 29th Monterey Classic event in California. More than 60 examples of the featured Corvette model packed the entry.

Brian Redman was the star of the meeting: he won the 1955-59 sports-racing car event by a tiny margin in a 1958 Scarab, before taking sixth in a BMW CSL in the Group 4/5/6 and IMSA race. The latter race went to Randall Smith’s Chevron B19.

Barrie Williams, appearing in a Cooper Monaco, took third in the 1959-66 sports-racing car event, ‘Whizzo’ beaten by Joel Matta (Lotus 23B) and Tom Byrnes (Brabham BT8), while Frank Sytner’s Cooper Monaco-Chevrolet failed to start.

Single-seaters featured in a 1957-66 Formula Cars race, with Lotus securing a 1-2-3 result courtesy of Tom Claridge, Giles Nickel and Don Orosco respectively.
