The Austrian Grand Prix proved a start-to-finish victory for Carlos Reutemann’s Brabham BT44, seen on the right leading Niki Lauda’s Ferrari away from the Osterreichring starting grid. Second place went to Denny HuImes McLaren M23 (lower left), while James Hunt’s Hesketh (centre below) and John Watson’s Hexagon Brabham BT44 (right) were third and fourth after pit stops to change blistered front tyres. Bottom, Rolf Stommelen impressed during practice with the Embassy Lola but crashed in the race.
Lauda challenges Reutemann hard with Regazzoni in pursuit as they sweep round the Boshcurve at Osterreichring (above left). Regazzoni is passed by Fittipaldi, Pace and Peterson (above right). Below, David Hobbs McLaren M23 is challenged by Beltoise in the one BRM P201.
Ronnie Peterson (above) celebrates his second successive Italian Grand Prix triumph. Right, Jody Scheckter’s Tyrrell drifts through Parabolica on its way to third place ahead of Arturo Merzario (20), who had his best result of the year in his Williams-Cosworth. One of the most impressive practice performances came from John Watson (28), although his race machine was the spare works Brabham after he crashed the Goldie Hexagon car in practice.
