Rover Oil Consumption

In view of the heavy oil consumption of the Rover 90, of which a road-test report appeared last month, Motor Sport conducted a special oil-consumption check on the same car at the request of the Rover Company, who discovered that the car had covered a considerable mileage before being handed over.

On this occasion a distance of 510 miles was driven, during which the car used rather more than two pints.

We were not alarmed by the quantity of oil consumed during the full road-test, as a Rover 90 owned by one of our Directors used oil in a similar quantity during the first 1,200 miles. The owner, however, was certainly alarmed and returned the car to Rover’s London Service Depot. Since then a steady improvement has been reported and for the last 1,300 miles (including a tour of Scotland) the consumption was five pints.
