Outstanding new Alvis models for 1938 are the entirely new 1.8-litre fourcylinder car, a newcomer to the growing family of modern big fours, and the shortchassis edition of the six-cylinder 4.3 litre car. Alvis has long concentrated on extremely high-grade push-rod o.h.v, engines and the new four is of this type,

&seendant of the famous 12-50 fourcylinder of years ago and the more recent 12-60 h.p. models. Typically British in conception the Alvis range is fully upto-date and the specifications embrace leaf-spring independent front suspension for the sixes and all-synchro-mesh fourspeed gearboxes.

Alvis are to be complimented on introducing a complete new car into the field of 4-cylinder cars, which should be met with great approval.

The British-Salmson fills a long-felt need, as a car which has those characteristics proved correct in the stern school of racing, allied to the essential presentday qualities of dependability, ease of handling, and freedom from servicing problems. The engines all have twin overhead camshaft actuation of inclined overhead valves but they are by no manner of means racing units, indeed, the four-cylinder 13ritish-Salmson is as smooth as a good six and functions very economically. The engine, chassis and coachwork of these cars are beautifully

made and finished. The 12-55 h.p. model is a genuine 70 m.p.h. car, while the 15-70 h.p job does 80 m.p.h. or more on I ; -litres of engine, nor does closed bodywork materially reduce these speeds. The 20/90 h.p. six-cylinder BritishSalmson is a big husky motor-car capable of 90 m.p.h. and with other performance factors in keeping. It has independent front-wheel suspension by transverse leaf-springing and the two-seater is especially well laid out for trials and. rallies, etc., in which events it has, in fact, gained an enviable collection of awards.

Although some people aver that the day of the really high-priced fast car is over, Ettore Bngatti’s Type 57 and Tylie 57S 3.3-litre cars, based on the ” 3.3 ” Grand Prix Bugatti of a few years ago, have sold remarkably well in this

country. The beautifully-finished twin o.h. camshaft six-bearing straight-eight engines are unblown but definitely of racing conception, though they run very smoothly and quietly for all that and are also most economical in relation to the power output and performance achieved. The gearboxes have constant-mesh third speeds but no synchro-mesh and the tubular front axles pass through the front hall-elliptic springs, while at the rear the famous Bugatti reversed quarterelliptic layout is retained. The Type 57 has a single carburetter and does over 90 m.p.h. The Type 57S has twin carburation, the very expensive De Ram shock-absorbers, and is able to reach 115 m.p.h. in catalogue form.

Combining remarkable road-clinging qualities with excellent all-round performance and very fine steering, the Frazer-Nash-B.M.W. is highly spoken of wherever motor-sportsmen meet, though, in reality, it is essentially a fast touring rather than a sports-car and in consequence is notably dependable. In 11and 2-litre forms it is extremely popular while the Type 328 2-litre sports model, with pushrod operated o.h. valves inclined at 90°, is a genuine 100 m.p.h. motorcar of great appeal. One of these cars covered over 102 miles in an hour at Brooklands under R.A.C. observation this year, and they have performed outstandingly in trials and races, winning their class in the recent T.T., finishing third in that Race.

Mercedes-Benz and their products are SO well known that they hardly need much mention in this article. They have won a great reputation for the manufacture of a really fast car, but behind the production is also a wish for 100 per cent. reliability. The type 540K is well known to readers of ” Motor Sport,” having already been road-tested in the April issue of this year. The 230 type model is the development of the utility cat type 200. The model 170 is the low Priced car of this range, and has rapidly won immense popularity and proved itself thoroughly reliable. It does 30 miles to the gallon and 2,000 miles on a gallon of oil.

The new Mercedes-Benz type 320 is the latest in progress of this marque. Several bodies are made, designed to meet every need, both on the standard and short chassis. As with all products of thu:. firm, all their cars have remarkable road holding qualities, and the longest of journeys becomes a pleasant experthice.

Some years ago Reid A. Railton, chief designer to Messrs. Thompson and Taylor, Ltd., at Brooklands, designed around a famous Canadian car a sports model to appeal in respect of appearance and roadholding with the standards set by British enthusiasts, while retaining its smooth, easy running and immense acceleration that characterises cars from across the Atlantic. The result was remarkably successful and the R ailton enjoys great popularity. Although the straight-eight motor is of side-valve type a compression ratio as high as 7.5 to 1 is used and, running on ordinary pump fuels, a b.h.p. per litre of thirty is realised, a very good

output indeed. Nor is the Railton a heavy car, iso that its acceleration is of a very high order indeed, the light sports example not only exceeds 100 m.p.h., but beats well known supercharged sports cars off the mark. Dignified coachwork has long been a Railton association.

The Rolls-Royce is British motor-engineering at its best and, as such, is unsurpassed by any other production. The ” Phantom III” 40/50 h.p. has a V twelve-cylinder 7.6-litre power-unit of outstanding technical merit and truly beautiful external finish. It has pushrod actuation of overhead valves and is carburetted by a Rolls-Royce carburetter. The front suspension of the big chassis is independent and the wheels are clamped by automatically adjusted hydraulic shock-absorbers that are also under full control of the driver. The synchro -mesh gearbox retains the

aristocratic right-hand control. The Rolls-Royce is the most silent car on the road, yet its performance shames most sports-models and, beyond that, it handles with extreme accuracy, every control, major or minor, functioning with perfect precision.

The 20/25 h.p. model is a Six-cylinder small brother of the world renowned ” Phantom.”

Typically modern in conception, the present-day Triumphs come into that widely-appreciated class of car which owes a great deal to the sportscar, yet which is ” touring ” in respect of comfort, ease of maintenance, and appearance. A new model for next season is the 11-litre ” Dolomite,” while the larger “Dolomite “saloon was comprehensively road-tested by MOTOR

SPORT earlier this year. Very smart radiator grilles are a distinctive feature of the modern Triumphs.
