Alexander Duckham & Co.’s exhibit of non-gumming, non-freezing ADCOL ‘ lubricants includes a petrol engine turning at high speed and illustrating one way in which unsuitable oil reduces efficiency. The valve mechanism can be examined by means of a special lamp, which renders visible the action of rapidly moving parts somewhat in the same way as the slow-motion cinema does. Thus the delayed closing of a badly lubricated valve can be watched, although actually it occupies only a few thousandths of a second.
