The collection: Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna helmets
A quick test for you: without hesitating to think about it, which driver do you most associate with McLaren? Depending on your age, you might say Lewis Hamilton or Mika Häkkinen, James Hunt or even Bruce himself. But we’d put money that whatever your generation, most would name one of these two: Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna enjoyed their greatest years in day-glo and white. Twenty-three years after their final combustible season together, they continue to intrigue and inspire fans and drivers alike – not least McLaren’s current pair of incumbents. Helmet colours are a badge of identity. Sebastian Vettel, who never seems to use the same design twice, clearly sets little store by such things. Kimi Räikkönen and Michael Schumacher, they’ve changed their colours, too. But Prost and Senna? They never meddled. As it says on their lids, they both managed to be Boss (at the same time)… and their colours were part of the mystique – especially when they loomed large in juddering rear-view mirrors.
