FISA axes WTC after one year

Having been in existence for just one year, the World Touring Car Championship is to be discontinued in 1988, it was announced at FISA’s Executive Meeting in Paris last month.

Against the wishes of the teams currently competing, the series will revert to a European format, though a four-race Pan-Pacific miniseries will be organised towards the end of the year.

A “silhouette” formula is to be introduced in 1989 for the planned Production Car World Championship, and the future of Group A touring car racing is uncertain beyond that
