Formula 1: Good month, bad month — May 2023
Charting the ups and downs of the F1 circus
Good month
Faster Aston
Cheeky ’Nando’s Aston Martin heroics are the only thing saving the F1 season so far.
Mercedes’ web admin
Filming the return of his third place Saudi trophy to Aston Martin turned an awkward moment into social media gold for George Russell
Full Gas
Life at L’Equipe de France is off to a good start for Pierre Gasly with two points finishes from two races.
Unbelievable engineering
AlphaTauri boss Franz Tost hauled his engineers over the coals via interview in Saudi because – according to him – the car’s rubbish. Great to see.
Miracle worker
Self-proclaimed worst team on the grid Williams actually looked quite handy in Bahrain, with Alex Albon snaring a point.
Bad Month
Cross Jos
Jos Verstappen had F1 fans up in arms for being Saudi’s sorest loser during Pérez’s post-race celebrations. Impressively ungracious.
Winding back the stopwatch
Similar to farcical penalties of F1’s yesteryear, the FIA took three hours and three decisions to establish the Saudi finishing order. Appalling.
Same old Scuderia Story
Leclerc’s new Fezza conked out in Bahrain, meaning a grid penalty in Saudi. Not even surprised.
Bah-humbug
Bahrain’s dud season opener complete with ‘sell-out’ 36,000 crowd.
Woeful woking
Two races, zero points and heads are rolling at McLaren with tech boss shown the door. Will he be the last?
