Donington celebrates its 70th
The 70th anniversary of the first ever car race at Donington Park was marked in late March by a gathering of drivers associated with that meeting held on March 25, 1933.
Tom Delaney, 92, competed in his Lea-Francis in the circuit’s first season, and is still racing the same car 70 years later with the VSCC.
Also driving a Hyper Lea-Francis was historic racer Willie Green whose father, WH Green, conducted the first assessment laps in the car prior to the inaugural meeting.
Also present at the reunion — hosted by the circuit’s owner Tom Wheatcroft — was Max Turner, who co-drove for his brother at the inaugural meeting, the pair finishing in second place in a 750cc Austin.
