Record find

Sir,

The letter from David Stick (February 2003) concerning the audio masterpieces by Stanley Schofield Productions reminded me that I own a number of motor-racing records, and an hour’s rummaging in the loft unearthed four examples.

Two are 45rpm EPs produced by Schofield. One is a recording of the 1958 Grand Prix d’Europe at Spa, with a commentary by John Bolster.

The other is of the 1958 British Grand Prix at Silverstone. The commentary is, as before, by Bolster and the record includes interviews with Mike Hawthorn and Peter Collins, who finished in first and second places.

The third record is titled Motor Racing with Stirling Moss, which is also an EP, but this one is a Fiona Bentley production issued by HMV in 1960. The record indudes a sequence of Moss describing a lap of Aintree from the car.

The fourth — and my favourite — is a 33.3rpm LP of the 1959 Monaco Grand Prix, also produced by Schofield. Included are interviews with the likes of Fangio, Moss, Brooks, Brabham, Phil Hill, Schell and Maria-Teresa de Filippis. The record has some fine sound effects and captures well the atmosphere of the event.

I am, yours etc,
