Restoration crusade

Sir,

I was delighted to see your recent article on the Clan Crusader works rally car. The car featured is RR001, but there was another works rally Clan: RR004. This was built from the lessons learnt from the first and was to have been used by Andy Dawson in the 1973 season.

Before this could happen, however, Andy left Clan to move to Datsun. RR004 was then sold to a Scottish rally driver, Donald Heggie, who used it in the 1973 season and achieved a best result of first in class on the Jim Clark Memorial Rally.

The car subsequently had a chequered history before ending up on the hills with the back of its monocoque cut off and an upright Imp engine fitted. It is now owned by my brother who is slowly restoring it to hill-climb specification. Eventually it is hoped that the necessary parts and time can be found to return it back to rally spec.

I am, yours etc,
Edward Newman, Camberley, Surrey
