Jarama? No drama

Sir,

Following Mark Hughes’ Gilles Villeneuve item in the April edition, maybe I’d better come clean after all these years: I think the 1981 Spanish Grand Prix at Jarama was one of the most boring races I have ever watched.

Once Alan Jones had thrown his leading FW07 Williams off the road, it soon became apparent that nobody from within the train trailing around after Villeneuve would overtake anybody.

As for it being a brilliant piece of driving by Villeneuve a great driver, yes I think any top-class driver on that circuit, with more acceleration and top speed than the following group, could have kept ahead. At the time, I just wished, perish the thought, that somebody might nudge him out of the way so we could get on with the race.

Oh well, having taken the plunge, I thought Citizen Kane, though a technically brilliant film, was boring, too.
