The appraisal of ‘The Greatest Rally Driver’ in your April issue is interesting, and few would disagree with the selection of Hannu Mikkola.

A further illustration of his talent was his entry at Shelsley Walsh in 1986. He’d never seen the place, and yet, in an Audi Quattro, he shattered the record for a closed car and made overall F ID.

It was, as they say, a performance which “emptied the bars” and those present on that July day still talk about his exploits with great admiration.
