Supersports circus to visit Zandvoort and Daytona
The world’s most spectacular historic sportscar championship, the International Supersports Cup is visiting the Daytona Speedway and Holland’s Zandvoort circuit for the first time this year.
‘Charlie Agg’s Flying Circus,’ which thrilled spectators on its maiden ‘US Raid’ to Elkhart Lake’s Road America circuit for last year’s 30th Anniversary CanAm reunion, expects record entries for Daytona, which will be the last race of its 11th season.
More than 80 drivers from eight countries are trying to join the series which, as well as being competitive on-track, boasts a camaraderie and social element unrivalled in contemporary racing.
Monstrous Chevy-powered McLaren, March and Lola Can-Am cars will rule the roost at most circuits, but the agility of the 2-litre Chevrons and Lolas should keep them busy at the twistier venues. Four of the ten races are in Britain — a round at Brands Hatch is planned, with firm fixtures at Donington and a welcome return to Silverstone. The series would not be complete without the classic Spa, Nurburgring and Brno.
This year’s calendar is: May 4/5, Silverstone; May 24/25, Spa-Francorchamps; May 31/Jun 1, Donington Park; Jun 21/22, Nurburgring; Jul 6/7, Brands Hatch; Aug 2/3, Zandvoort; Aug 9/10, Nurburgring; Sep 13/14, Brno; Sep 27/28, Assen and October 4/5, Daytona.
