Motor-racing Etonians
It was announced a short time back that Eton College is to close its museum of animals, birds and other specimens shot and brought back to England by ex-pupils, because now very few of the boys visit this corner of memories of how some builders of Empire relaxed in their spare moments. The curator was, we heard, open to suggestions for something of wider appeal reflecting recent activities. I wrote suggesting that in view of the great interest now shown in motor-racing, perhaps pictures and artifacts reminding visitors of how some ex-Etonians turned to this sport in the days when it was a gentlemanly game, might appeal. Lionel Martin, Count Zborowski, K Lee Guinness, Sir Henry Segrave, Charlie Martin and John Cobb came to mind. No doubt you can add to this list. Alas, my letter was not replied to…
