VSCC Wessex Trial

A COLD and mainly dry March weekend saw VSCC members assembling at Priddy in the Mendips for the first Club trial of the year. A full entry of 70 had been received, reduced by non-starters to 63 competing cars on the day. Most interesting car present was Sudjic’s 1929 Tracta 12 saloon, trailed down from Scotland; with its 998 c.c. horizontally opposed, air cooled, twin cylinder engine and comfortable saloon body, its performance is rather limited and Sudjic did well to score as many points with this unlikely trials car as he did.

Uglow’s Riley engined MIG dropped only 42 points over the 14 sections to win the event from Leigh’s TT Replica Frazer Nash and Garfitt’s immaculate Frazer Nash BMW (which put up best performance in the touring class). A strong contingent of a dozen 30/98 Vauxhalls were led by Ghosh in his now externally immaculate May Special, followed closely by Jones’ Velez and Collings in Brenda Rowley’s Wensum. Hine, driving Llewellyn’s 4, Bentley did extremely well to beat Threlfall’s Model A Ford and showed that a Bentley can be an effective car fire VSCC trials.

Clarke’s Austin Chummy, winner of this event for the past few years, only managed a second Class award being beaten by Moffatt in his Brescia Bugatti as well as Uglow and Leigh. Smith (who had never competed on a trial before, despite organising the Lakeland Trial since its inception) did well to gain an award in Giles’ Anzani engined Frazer Nash. — P.H.J.W.
