"Skinner's Folly"
Sir,
Further to Messrs. Kippax and Davidson’s letters regarding Austin 7 CA 6577 published in Motor Sport. I well remember purchasing this car from my friend Dennis Wallace. As it was rather non-vintage ill appearance we sought to re-body it with more appropriate carroserie and, to this end, fitted a Chummy body of about 1927. In this form I used it extensively in VSCC competitions for a couple of years. In fact, I think it is the only car to have won its class at Prescott and First Class Award in the Welsh Rally in the same year!
The “hot Chummy” was retired when I acquired my first Ulster and it resided in one of my sheds for some years until Julian Vereker expressed a wish to restore it. Julian rebuilt the body to an original design but pressure of business forced him to give up the project and the car was sold to Sandy Skinner, who has made such a splendid job of finishing the rebuild.
